Marley Reincarnated?
Thursday, August 03, 2006
This just in off the wire services. It seems a guard dog on overnight duty in a toy museum in London got into a bit of mischief on his own. I suppose I shouldn't laugh at the misfortune of all those pricey dolls, but the image is just too perfect. Marley's wacky, indomitable spirit lives on in Barney.
Here's the story. I love the image of Barney's handler, Greg West, having to chase Barney all over the museum to try to pin him down. Oh, such a Marley moment!
LONDON (AP) — A guard dog has ripped apart a collection of rare teddy bears, including one once owned by Elvis Presley, during a rampage at a children's museum.
"He just went berserk," said Daniel Medley, general manager of the Wookey Hole Caves near Wells, England, where hundreds of bears were chewed up Tuesday night by the 6-year-old Doberman pinscher named Barney.
Barney ripped the head off a brown stuffed bear once owned by the young Presley during the attack, leaving fluffy stuffing and bits of bears' limbs and heads on the museum floor. The bear, named Mabel, was made in 1909 by the German manufacturer Steiff.
The collection, valued at more than $900,000, included a red bear made by Farnell in 1910 and a Bobby Bruin made by Merrythought in 1936.
The bear with Elvis connections was owned by English aristocrat Benjamin Slade, who bought it at an Elvis memorabilia auction in Memphis, Tenn., and had loaned it to the museum.
"I've spoken to the bear's owner and he is not very pleased at all," Medley said.
A security guard at the museum, Greg West, said he spent several minutes chasing Barney before wrestling the dog to the ground.

Wow, that IS a Marley moment! I wonder what sort of discipline they decided upon for Barney... hopefully, nothing too serious! Just keep him away from stuffies!
HAHA! I read this story earlier today and laughed my head off. My dog would have gone on the same binge... classic...
I saw a clip of this happy dog. The slobber stringing off his lip had to have been 4 inches long. What a great story.
I can picture the exact same thing happening if I left my dog alone with a bunch of stuffed toys!
It has to be said, is it just to me that it seems obviously daft to employ a guard dog in a place filled with cuddly toys??!!!! Perhaps CCTV would've been a safer option (and, as it turns out, considerably cheaper!)
Hi John,
I´ve just finished Marley and Me yesterday, and the final was so sensible and beatifull that I catch myself crying for a long time!!
I wrote here already, I´m Fromm Brazil and I love your book.
There´s a row of friends waiting to read my book because we don´t have a translate version of portuguese.
Congratulations!

I am cracking up! I just, moments ago, finished the book and am laughing not just at the antics and similarities...I thought it was just a yellow lab thing. My Ella is somewhere between 9 &13, we're leaning more towards 12. Last night, I was reading and, as I was reading the chapter when Marley began falling and having the hip issues, Ella lept up at pain from - yes, an ear infection, fell, and had a hard time getting back up.
Of course I had to finish the book today! My mother-in-law had read it first and said to me, "you MUST read this book. This IS Ella!" She bought it, I laughed, I cried.
I'm so glad to read that Barney, not being a lab, had just as much fun...what an adventure that must have been!
I will most definitely be recommending this book to all of my friends, family, and those who stop by my blog!

Mr. Grogan,
Like everyone who's read "Marley and Me" I want more of your beloved "goof". Please advise if "The Last Home Run" is available.
I have searched Blockbuster and several other websites, to no avail.
Please advise to bpost@comcast.net
Thank you
thanks for sharing such an awesomely bad doggie moment! it makes my dog's mischievious deeds seem a lot less worse! but that poor barney could only be tempted for so long!

dear jhon grogan, I write for saying that its book with all certainty moved me and much people, with reading the its book I to it it smiles and it cried, a extremity of emoçôes. was as its I lived its history and of marley. M and apaxonei for its dog and its family. I here in Portugal (with another friend that also liked very it its book. for being gotten passionate by dogs) desire to it all the luck of the world.
P.S sorry for my bad english
I loved that story. Poor dog...how's he supposed to know the teddy bears aren't there for him??!!
My dog, Roxie June, a very clever Aussie mix, she confiscated a stuffed dog a friend had given me. I was dusting my dresser and had removed the items on it, including the stuffed dog. As I was arranging the pictures back on the dresser I noticed the spot where I had the dog was empty. I searched around the bed where I had set it while dusting and even under the bed thinking it may have fallen off. That's when Roxie appeared in the bedroom doorway, tail wagging, so proud of her new discovery. Ofcourse a chase ensued but all in fun. I knew once I saw that stuffed dog in her mouth I'd never again put it back on my dresser. It's now hers...and that's OK.
I also want to mention that I just finished Marley & Me and LOVED IT! I knew the ending was sad so I read it out loud to Roxie. Talk about a good cry and my Roxie is so sweet when she knows I'm sad. She just cuddled right up to me as I read her the ending. I wouldn't know what to do without my dog.
I just finished reading your book to my 7yr old daughter and we both loved it. Of course, I cried through the last few chapters. I just lost my 12 yr old kitty, so the feelings were still raw for me. I tell my girls that Sassy is reincarnated as a little yellow finch who we see daily in the garden. Thanks for your beautiful book. We would love to see a movie about Marley! Mandy & Violet
I loved Marley and Me, you made it feel like we were right there with you!! I cried on the last couple of chapters---really touching. You and your family are probably some of the most patient people around. Thank God for Marley, and thank you for not giving up on him, he made for a great life with your family, and a great book to read!!!
I live in Bristol, not far from Wells.
Barney has got to be Marley re-incarnated. Marley and Me was the funniest, most well-written dog story I have ever read. I am half-way through and don't want to get to the end!!!
this is such a funny story Sounds exactly what Marley would have done.
