When Dogs Do Good
Wednesday, June 18, 2008
I love stories of dogs who rise to the occasion, jumping into action when needed, and surprising their owners and everyone else. I especially love stories about dumb-as-dust dogs no one ever thought could find it in their tiny brains to act...heroically. If you like these kinds of stories, too, you must read this one, about a goofy Lab named Jake. Who was loyal as the day was long. And who noticed when no one else did that his boy owner fell into a fast-running river. And who didn't hesitate even a second before plunging into the roiling water to try to rescue him.
It's quite a story. And people who have never owned dogs wonder why we put up with all the drool, dog hair, and scratch marks?Sheesh...

Thank you so much for giving me the gift of reading Marly and me! I am not a dog lover and often wonder how and why to people put up with the mess their pets make. I just finished your book and cried for Marley and your family and now see the love a dog gives back!!! Thank you for sharing your story I don't even know Marley and I miss him.
Hi, I just finished reading your book. It was all I could do to not cry uncontrollably. We have a "Marley" who's name is McClain who is a Dane but a lot the same. Thank You so much for sharing Marley with us!
You told the story from your heart, job well done. Be Blessed!
I bought Marley & Me a couple days ago and really got to sink into it today. I read over 100+ pages today alone. I have never laughed at loud (or cried!) so much with any book. I want all my friends and family to read it!
I am anxious for the movie but can't help but figure it won't be nearly as good as this book.
Thank you, John, for writing an amazing book.
I just wanted to say I loved the book and Marley reminds me our Golden Retriver, Gary who is 5 years old now. He is loyal, great and we had our adventures when he was younger. I do not want to think of the day when he will leave us but I loved every minute of the book and found myself sobbing upon Marleys death...
I just read the newspiece. It's funny how they kept on saying the dog wasn't smart because he didn't mind or listen. I find that the dogs who won't mind are not stupid. They are smart, just stubborn. They think they are too smart to listen to you.
It's irritating when people call their dogs stupid when they've spent ZERO time working with them. In the video attached to this story, you can see the STUPID woman try to get their dog to SIT repeatedly. Based on this, she thinks the dog is dumb. How in the H*LL is this dog supposed to know how to sit when it's not been taught? The people in this story are dumb. Dumb for jumping into a fast river and dumb for calling their beautiful lab dumb.
Hello John, I am from Brazil and I can tell you, Marley&Me is on top parades here. It´s simply one of the best books I have ever read. I felt happy, sad (mostly at the end) and very pleased to read about this dog that teaches what life really is. As someone alreday wrote to you, I also cried a lot by myself reading this book, but also laughed a lot too!
Thank you very much and congratulations for having this beatiful family.
Regards.
Jeff.
I am writing a paper on you from my class and it says I need a personal interview. If you could just send me some information about why you write about your dog and anything else you cna think of that would be good for a paper, I would greatly appretiate it, Thank you Emily

Oi,

Mr Grogan, I have just finished reading Marley and Me for the SECOND time and what a pleasure Marley's story is. While I have never quite had a dog that had "challenges", I can tell you that pets with challenges can extend to any species! My experience has been with cats, which I have had many, and my own Marley was a black and white long haired cat named Elliott. After getting him declawed to stop him from damaging the furniture, imagine my surprise at finding that I had a cat that was a CHEWER also! That little rascal chewed my poor recliner to bits, not to mention eating anything that he could get his little paws on such as socks, nylons, plastic bags, straps to tops, you name it. He was a sweet oaf, but El Descructo was his surname. Your wonderful book has made me laugh and cry and the endearing, warm and witty way that you tell your story draws you in as a reader. In the past my very favorite author has been James Herriott, the veterinarian from Yorkshire(I think you would love his stories!) I have read his books since I was a child over and over again. Your charming writing style reminds me of him in the way that you tell the story with humor and how you poke fun at yourself as you tell the happenings of your early life and Marleys part in it. I will not part with my Marley book as I plan to read it over and over again through the years. Many congrats to you on your new book, may it do as well as Marley's story. Best wishes to you and your family.

What is it with people naming their Labs Jake? I rescued a black Lab named Jake two years ago (he's like a little ghost of Marley-in fact I read passages of the book out loud to a friend and she wanted to know why you'd been spying on me) and since then I've heard of at least 4 other Labs named Jake.
I'm sure you're growing tired of people thanking you for writing the book, but I'm going to thank you again anyway... I struggled to contain myself from laughing hysterically and scaring other passengers on a plane while reading all the cute naughty little things Marley did... He reminded me a lot of my chocolate labrador, Buffy, who is 6 now but still acts like a puppy... I am glad that you got to share your life with such a wonderful and loyal dog as I do now with Buffy... Bless you and your family...
