My short list

Friday, January 09, 2009

Time magazine recently asked me to come up with my "short list" of five things I'm currently enjoying. It's a feature they run every week, picking various people to weigh in.

Here's what I came up with. It appears in the current edition of Time, just out:

John Grogan's Short List
Thursday, Jan. 08, 2009

He's the author of the best seller Marley & Me and a new memoir, The Longest Trip Home. Here's what John Grogan has been watching, reading, listening to and harboring fond feelings for. (Oh, and he also went to see that flick about the couple and their crazy dog.)

The Wire
I don't subscribe to HBO, but after the umpteenth friend insisted that I just had to watch this police drama set in Baltimore, I bought the first season on DVD. I was hooked within the first 10 minutes, and now I'm on Season 2. In a world of predictable and hackneyed story lines, The Wire is fresh, nuanced and raw. You will find no black and white here, only a million shades of gray.

Valkyrie
The true story of a plot inside the Third Reich to assassinate Hitler. The critics have been mixed on this one, but I found Tom Cruise's performance credible and the story compelling, even if we all know the outcome before the opening credits roll.

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski
A boy, a dog, struggles of life and death, even a ghost. What's not to like?

Emotionalism, by the Avett Brothers
I discovered the Avett Brothers while browsing in one of those iconic hippie shops in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. The album was playing on the store's sound system, and I was instantly smitten. It is impossible not to grin while listening to this infectiously upbeat blend of folk, rock and bluegrass, all played on acoustic instruments and with whimsical, witty lyrics to boot.

Jenna Fischer as Pam on The Office
My (wife-approved) celebrity crush. Redefining adorableness.

Hello, John!
I guess I'm gonna be the first here today...
I'm downloading some songs of the Avett Brothers to check if it is really cool...
You know, John, you and Jenny remind me of some cute songs of The Beatles... lol I don't know why but sometimes when I hear Obladi, Oblada I immediatly remind of you... an adorable couple with adorable kids living in their home, sweet home.
Oh, and no doubt if I would do a list of the 5 things that I'm enjoying now, your books and the movie would be on it!

Cheers!

Good Evening, John, I just ordered your newest book, The Longest Trip Home and I can't wait to start reading it. Having just seen Marley and Me, I had to have the book. Well, I finished it two nights ago and I can't get enough of your writing style. Yes, I bawled my eyes out. I have two Yellow Labs. 12 year old Duke and 6 month old Ranger. It hit home. What are you working on now. I know you don't like to jinx it by talking about it, but can you give me a hint? Thank you for your book and the movie and especially for your care of Woodson.

My husband and I also love Irish/Celtic music. We are going next weekend to the Sellersville thearter to see Celtic Crossroads. I loved the part in Marly&Me when you and your wife were in Ireland.

John,

Congratulations on, well, everything! I really enjoyed the movie, and I'm glad to see it having such success, just like your wonderful books. I think I spotted you and Jenny - you were in the obedience school scene, right? That was one of the funniest scenes - and it must have been so surreal for you guys! Anyway, congrats.

Yesterday, me and my husband saw the movie.
I cried a lot.
When we got home hugged my dog, lots of love.
But, when we left him go out to poo, he ate a bone that was at the garbage.
Oh, my dog!!! At same time I remembered Marley. And said, "-Jesus, Bidu, your name is not Marley, be a good dog, be quiet, do not make mess, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease."
He is called Bidu.
Thak you for your sensibility.
Thank you for the choices you made (family, kidss, dogs). Those things makes you a great man.
God bless you all.
Congratulations.
Keep writing about feelings of dog lovers.

My short list includes the famous way Ellen Degeneres of the Ellen show got George Clooney. She put a banner up that said George is mine in 09. She finally got two baseball team members of Clooney's to actually show up at his office(next door to the studio) and egged him onto the stage. He said he was out of town while she was trying to whoo him-(we know better) his car was parked outside the studio-he was in there alright-my short list is John Grogan is mine in 09-
